What is mixing?

At a basic level mixing is the creation of the final mix of a song by combining its different elements. The aim of mixing is to create the best possible listening experience while conveying the feeling and message of a song. The right mix can really bring a song to life, but it can’t do it to make a song something that it’s not when the production or arrangement is lacking. You should always be happy with your production before sending it for mixing.

Five basic steps of mixing

1. BalanceBalancing levels between individual elements of the song, including using automation to change the levels in different parts of the song if necessary.
4. CompressionCompression is used to control the dynamic range of instruments as well as to alter the sound.
2. StereoUsing panning to position elements within the stereo field.
5. EffectsEffects such as reverb, delay and chorus can be used to make a mix more interesting, as well as helping things to blend in with the track.
3. EQUsing EQ to control the frequency range of different elements so that they sit well together, as well as adjusting the tone of the song’s parts.

I will need from you
